I’m ever so grateful that I happened to read Frantz Fanon in the early 1960s. In fact, during the summer of 1962. It was during my first trip to Europe when I attended the 8th World Festival of Youth and Students in Helsinki and decided to spend some time in Paris before traveling to Helsinki. There was turmoil, in Paris, the Algerian revolution had just triumphed and the OAS continued to commit its atrocities. It was the summer after my first year in college, I was 18 years old. And at the very beginning of my political trajectory, I was excited about expanding my French and had begun to read philosophers like Sartre in French before I arrived in France. I probably spent more time in bookstores than anywhere else except the university. So I quickly discovered that Sartre had written a preface to a book by a psychoanalyst from Martinique, an activist psychoanalyst from Martinique by the name of Frantz Fanon. And so I quickly bought Les Damnés de la Terre as well as L’An V de la Révolution Algérienne and realized later that the most important moment of my very first visit to Europe and to France was the discovery of Frantz Fanon and the Algerian Revolution. Both Fanon and the Algerian Revolution have remained very close to my heart ever since.

C’était lors de mon premier voyage en Europe, où je participais au 8e Festival mondial de la jeunesse et des étudiants à Helsinki et où j’avais décidé de passer quelque temps à Paris avant de me rendre à Helsinki. Il y avait des troubles à Paris, la révolution algérienne venait de triompher et l’OAS continuait à commettre ses atrocités. C’était l’été après ma première année à l’université, j’avais 18 ans. Au tout début de mon parcours politique, j’étais enthousiaste à l’idée d’améliorer mon français et j’avais commencé à lire des philosophes comme Sartre en français avant d’arriver en France. Je passais probablement plus de temps dans les librairies qu’ailleurs, à l’exception de l’université. J’ai donc rapidement découvert que Sartre avait écrit la préface d’un livre d’un psychanalyste martiniquais, un psychanalyste militant martiniquais du nom de Frantz Fanon. J’ai donc rapidement acheté Les Damnés de la Terre ainsi que L’An V de la Révolution Algérienne et j’ai réalisé plus tard que le moment le plus important de ma toute première visite en Europe et en France avait été la découverte de Frantz Fanon et de la révolution algérienne. Depuis, Fanon et la révolution algérienne occupent une place très importante dans mon cœur.
